Dr. Shamima Ahmed

Dr. Shamima Ahmed of  NKU's MPA program has co-authored the second edition of the book called "NGOs in International Politics: Actors and Actions" with Dr. David M. Potter of Nanzan University in Japan and Dr. Robyn Linde of Rhode Island College (RIC). Congrats and kudos to all three scholars on this notable achievement!

The book overview says: "The role of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in international politics has changed significantly in the two decades since the first edition of this book was published. This new edition explores that role, including new chapters and updated data — and using examples such as the Covid-19 pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, earthquake relief in Syria and Turkey, refugee crises in Mexico and Uganda, current lobbying efforts in the US and UN, and much more — to highlight the current relevance of the topic."

The 300-page book will be published this Fall by Lynne Rienner Publishers. You can visit this web site to learn more about the book, including the table of contents, and to preorder it in either paperback ($35) or hardcover ($115).

Dr. Darrin Wilson is guest author of a LINK nky article about citizen academies, which are designed to enhance local government transparency and to further citizen engagement and education. "Participating in a citizen academy is a highly rewarding experience," he writes. "Not only do residents meet one another and engage with the public servants who provide vital services every day, but they also gain a deeper understanding of how their local government functions, including the policies, procedures, and mandates that guide
decision-making."

According to Dr. Wilson, more than 15 local governments operate a citizen academy in the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati region, including fiscal courts, police departments, and sheriff's offices. The article has a list of Northern Kentucky governments with citizen academies along with links to pages with more information. K9 Gunny. Photo by Kathleen Bryant | LINK nky
