A bachelor’s degree in human services and addictions prepares you to be a helping professional who can serve a diverse group of clients in a wide range of settings and in various roles. In addition to developing skills to help clients individually and in small groups, you will learn about case management, human services administration, ethical issues in human services, and cultural competence. You will also select two elective courses from a variety of topics such as Death, Dying and Grief, Behavior Problems of Children, Addiction and Society, and Family Systems. Courses are available online to accommodate the schedules of busy students.
Substance Use and Addiction Training
The Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services and Addictions at NKU also aligns to the credentialing requirements for alcohol and drug counseling. Students are provided with valuable opportunities to gain specialized knowledge of substance use and addictions, supported by both coursework and supervised field experiences. Students develop the practical skills and professional competencies necessary to work effectively in the field of human services and addictions. provides unique opportunities to learn about substance abuse and addictions.
In addition to coursework, students will be required to
complete two field experience and seminars (180 hours each) for a total of 360 supervised hours. These experiences are designed to integrate academic knowledge with entry level practice, allowing students to develop applied skills in human service settings. Placements can be completed in Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky area; however, students may request approval for placements within their region or local community agencies.
Students enrolled in HSR 304: Field Experience and Seminar and HSR 404: Advanced Field Experience and Seminar provide structured opportunities for reflection, integration of classroom content, and professional development.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services and Addictions is a flexible degree that leads to entry-level positions in settings such as governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, drug treatment programs and residential facilities. Graduates of this program are also well prepared to enter master’s programs in related fields such as counseling or social work.
